Description
In 1936 the Catholic faith community of New London began as a mission church of St. Helena's of Enfield. The group came together to worship on Sundays and holy days in what is presently the Kearsarge SAU office on Main St in New London. In October of 1952 Our Lady of Fatima Parish was formally established. In December of that year Immaculate Conception was dedicated and thereafter became a mission of Our Lady of Fatima. Fifteen years later Our Lady of Fatima's newly constructed church, on its current site, was dedicated. This 1967 building was completely renovated and rededicated on December 7, 1997. Today the faith community of Our Lady of Fatima and Immaculate Conception Parish encompasses approximately 16 towns, and attempts to live out the words of our former pastor, Richard Lower: "Our newly renovated house of prayer reflects the beauty and simplicity of this tranquil spot in New England. All the light and warmth signify that we are a community of welcome. We embrace all that wish to enter here and worship in prayer and song." We have begun a new chapter in the life of our faith community with the arrival in June 2003 of our new pastor, Fr. Robert Biron. Fr. Robert Biron has just recently moved into the parish and would like to offer any new parishioner the same welcome that he has received from the people of Our Lady of Fatima and Immaculate Conception. His latest assignment was as University Chaplain at UNH in Durham and pastor of St. Thomas More in Durham. He hails from Berlin NH and went to high school and college in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. He received his undergraduate degree from Niagara University at Our Lady of the Angels Seminary in Albany NY and his Masters in Divinity from St. Mary's University and Seminary in Baltimore MD. Fr. Biron was ordained for the Diocese of Manchester on May 25, 1974. He celebrated his first Mass in his home parish of St. Joseph in Berlin. After being assigned as associate pastor at parishes in Somersworth, Keene, Manchester, and Dover he was named Pastor at St. Bernard in Keene in 1987 and then moved back to the NH seacoast to become pastor at St. Martin Somersworth in 1996. After spending 5 years in Somersworth he went to Durham. Fr. Biron has been Ecumenical Officer for the Diocese since 1999 and heads the office for Inter-Religious Affairs as well. He is currently President of the NH Council of Churches and is a member of the Jewish/Christian Interfaith Partnership in NH.
