Founded in 1987, The Houston Choral Society is composed of passionate, experienced singers who perform a breadth of music from the great masters, contemporary composers, American heritage, musical theater and opera. Last season, the Choral Society performed pieces by Samuel Barber, Adolphus Hailstork, Vincent Persichetti, Daniel Pinkham, Randall Thompson, and many others. We offered a marvelous selection of great opera choruses in “The Chorus on Stage” in the fall, and we rejoined the Prairie View A&M University Concert Chorale for a concert demonstrating “The Power of Unity” in the spring. The Choral Society also performs major works such as Mozart’s Requiem and Handel’s Messiah periodically.In recent years, the group has presented Brahms’ beloved Requiem in German with full orchestral accompaniment; a concert version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore with members of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Houston; Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Fort Bend Boys Choir of Texas and Cy-Fair High School Choir in Moores Opera House at the University of Houston; Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem at the Wortham Center, and they debuted a commissioned piece by Dr. Adolphus Hailstork called Set Me On a Rock, sung with The Prairie View A&M University Concert Chorale at the Wortham Center.
