I am Colleen Thorsen, and I was born and raised in the Seattle area. The youngest of 8 children, I learned most of my sewing skills from my mother, Ida, and my five older sisters. In 2005 after taking on the project of making all of the bridesmaid dresses for a wedding, I became interested in the art of couture, and in 2006 received my Certificate of Couture Sewing Techniques. Since then, I have been designing and sewing my unique styles, inspired mostly by vintage silhouettes. I now work one-on-one with local clients to create custom dresses. In addition, you can find a small collection of ready-to-wear dresses and made-to-order bridal online at My sewing studio is on Whidbey Island where clients from all over the Puget Sound area come for consultations and fittings. Please feel free to contact me for an appointment. The word "couture" is simply the French word for "sewing". In clothing design, however, "couture" is used when referring to certain hand sewing techniques and garment fitting. When you buy a couture garment, you should expect various layers of underlinings, hand stitching, and steel boning for support, among many other details that set these garments apart from ready-to-wear dresses. Seamstresses use couture techniques when building fine formal dresses to ensure proper fit and drape of the fabric. It is a time-consuming process, however the results are very satisfying and beautiful.
