As we at Planetary Solutions define environmentally sound building, there are several elements which together create a solution to our ecological nightmare -- using locally available materials, appropriate siting and scaling of buildings, use of recycled and resource efficient materials, energy-efficient and water-efficient technologies, and use of products which are low-toxic in their manufacture, use, and ultimate disposal. It is hard to give one of these elements greater importance over another. However, the market expresses its priorities. Some products are in demand and some are still specialty items. Planetary Solutions sells products which are innovative, yet are proven and being produced and sold in sufficient volume to be priced competitively. There is a significant difference between a product that is a good idea and a product whose time has come. For instance, one of Planetary Solutions' top-selling product is our line of carpeting made from recycled plastic pop bottles. Several factors have to converge for a product's time to come. It must be competitively priced (as the carpet is), it must have some substantial new benefit (the food grade polymer in the carpet is more stain resistant than the fiber in other carpet), but more than anything else the product must have, in Paul Hawken's words, the permission of the marketplace. In the case of the carpet, there has been so much written in newspapers about the problem of oversupply of and insufficient demand for recycled materials (and people have spent sufficient personal time recycling their newspapers, bottles, and cans) that a critical mass of awareness has been reached such that people are now demanding recycled products.
