How did we go from selling souvenir items to selling fine jewelry: In the true entrepreneurial spirit, our grandparents, E. C. and Maria Gilman started the Lost River Caverns tourist business in 1930. At first, a few samples of local rocks and gift items were sold as souvenirs. As time went on, interest was growing in the "rock hounding" hobby. This led to more sales in rocks and minerals, lapidary equipment, jewelry findings, tools, metalsmithing, and eventually fine jewelry.
