Greenleaf Wholesale Florist, Inc. began in the late 1950`s as the shipping department for the Kitayama Brothers greenhouses. The four Kitayama brothers, Tom, Ray, Kee and Ted, began growing flowers in California during the late 1940s and the business expanded quickly getting to the point in the late 1960s where Kitayama Brothers was the largest carnation grower in the world. Seeing an opportunity to both grow flowers and to sell and service retail florists, the Kitayama founders opened Greenleaf Wholesale stores in different cities during the late 1960`s. Stores from these early days included Houston, Minneapolis, Dallas, and New Orleans. Over the next 20 years, Greenleaf Wholesale continued to expand and open stores in different cities throughout the west and southwestern United States. In 2008, Greenleaf purchased United Wholesale to expand in the south central part of the US. As of 2012, Greenleaf is located in Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas. A lot has changed since the late 1960`s and Greenleaf Wholesale has changed too. In the late 1960`s there were a limited amount of variety and color of flowers and almost all of them were grown in the United States. Today, there are more types of flowers and colors than can be imagined and more than 80% of the flowers come from other countries. In any given week, Greenleaf is selling flowers from Holland, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Canada, Thailand, New Zealand, Australia, and Brazil. Greenleaf is also changing to provide better solutions for our customers, sourcing the best flowers and incorporating new distribution technologies to stay competitive.
