Description
In 1878, W. H. Varcoe decided to become a printer. His first press, purchased on Feb. 4, 1878, from R. Hoe Co. and called the Acorn Job Press was a hand fed press. With this he printed medicine and elixir labels and business cards in his home on Terrace Street in Honesdale. In 1905, his son, Edward P. Varcoe came to work with his father, then occupying the basement of Leine's Drug Store. They later moved to 114 7th Street, which they eventually bought and the business still occupies today. In 1922, W. Varcoe, who was in show business, returned home to enter the business with his father. At this time all presses were hand-feed, and hand-set type was used. In later years they acquired an automatic press and a linograph to set the type. George Eckbeck was the lino-typist. In 1942, the flood almost ruined them, but with hard work, and determination, they came back. The floodwater was 7-3/4 feet above the sidewalk. Some of the flood mud can still be seen in some hand type drawers. When W. Varcoe died in 1950, William E. Varcoe and George Eckbeck ran the shop until August 1959, at which time Bill Varcoe became owner. In 1959, Richard A. Varcoe entered the business with his father, combining the third and fourth generations. Progress continued with the erection of a new building in 1962. 1970 to 1977 showed more progress and additional new equipment. In 1972, Rae Ann Bishop, daughter of Richard A. Varcoe, joined the business and is the fifth generation. When she first entered the business right out of high school she worked with her grandfather, grandmother, and father, 3 generations all working together. Today, Rae Ann continues the Varcoe Family legacy as a fifth generation owner/printer. She is joined with Grace Bortree who was hired in 1987 and together these ladies run the entire shop from order taking, running the presses, folding and cutting equipment to doing the billing and typesetting. The firm continues to produce general business, legal and office forms, carbonless sets, wedding invitations, fax and copying service, newsletters, labels and much more.
