Five-star cruise lines

Cruise ships

There are a wide range of cruise lines on the market offering something for everyone, depending on your age, interests, and price range, with five-star-plus ultra-deluxe cruises providing the height of elegance and luxury, to budget options which offer more limited facilities and services but good value. Here we focus on five-star cruise lines.

These cruise lines represent the deluxe end of the cruise ship market, offering exceptional service, superb food, and often inclusive pricing. Many lines have a “no tipping” policy.

Passengers tend to be older, more experienced travelers who are interested in an enriching experience, rather than an intense activity program.

Five-star cruise lines offer diverse itineraries to more unusual destinations, as many of their passengers have already been to the more mainstream destinations.

If you are looking for an ultra-deluxe cruise, try a five-star-plus cruise line, which generally run small ships with low passenger numbers.

Some examples of five-star cruise lines:

Crystal Cruises is perhaps the most highly rated of all major cruise lines. Crystal Harmony and Crystal Symphony, carrying some 960 passengers, have each been voted “Ship of the Year”. The line’s newest ship is Crystal Serenity with capacity for 1,080 passengers. Crystal ships offer outstanding service and amenities.

Holland America Line is the oldest cruise line in the world, and is the leader in thefive-star category. Holland American invented the concept of serving casual breakfast and lunch on the Lido deck, since copied by othercruise lines.

Princess Cruises offer a range of modern mega-ships with contemporary and attractive décor, with original fine art. Staterooms are large with all modernamenities, and meals are offered 24 hours a day on the Lido deck. Princess ships cruise worldwide, with an emphasis on Alaska, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Hawaii.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises (formerly known as Radisson) strives to be the very best, offering excellent itineraries, extensive lecture and cruise enrichment programs, and complementary wines. Ships include the Radisson Diamond, a catamaran carrying 354 passengers, and the Mariner, with staterooms for 700 passengers, featuring more space per passenger than any other ship inthe world.

Seabourn Cruise Line is an ultra-deluxe line that cruises all over the world, featuring unusual itineraries. It offers single-sitting dining, superb food, 24-hour room service, and large, elegant cabins. These small ships offer onboard watersports equipment but few organized activities.

Silversea Cruises is one of the most ultra-deluxe cruise lines, aimed at the high end of the market. Prices are very high as virtually everything is included. Ships include Silver Cloud, Silver Wind, Silver Whisper, and Silver Shadow, all with spacious staterooms, mostly suites with balconies. Food and service are superb, with complementary wine.

Windstar Cruises offer the exclusivity of a small ship cruise with the informality of a sailing vessel, at a lower cost than other small ship cruise lines. They offer on-board watersports equipment and few planned activities, with no special facilities for children. These motorized sailing yachts offer excellent food and service. They cruise around the Pacific, Caribbean, and Mediterranean.
