Booking a wedding photographer and videographer

photographerWho is going to take our photographs and video?

It is important to take time to research photographers and videographers before booking, as your wedding photos and videos will be a permanent reminder of your special day even after the memories start to fade.

Word of mouth is a good way to find vendors, so do ask your friends and family for recommendations. Always look at examples of their recent work.

Your professional wedding photographer

You must feel comfortable with your photographer, as he or she will be with you for much of the day encouraging you to smile, and a good rapport leads to better pictures! A professional photographer is usually be accompanied by an assistant who helps make sure everyone is lined up correctly, and who will help make sure you look fantastic in every shot. By the end of the wedding you should hope to feel that the photographer and his or her assistant are friends!

Look out for photographers that specialize in wedding photography and who offer the kind of style you are looking for. Wedding photography has changed a great deal over recent years, and many couples like the more informal and stylish “reportage” style, in which the story of your wedding is told in pictures to great effect, without the stiff, posed shots of yesteryear. A blend of traditional formal photographs and the contemporary reportage style means you get a good variety of pictures.

Most professional wedding photographers these days only use digital cameras, with superb results. You can choose to have some shots done in sepia and black-and-white to add further atmosphere to your wedding photos. Digital photos taken in color can be converted to sepia or black-and-white, and can be edited, making changes to the photos if necessary to remove imperfections or to create artistic effects.

Wedding photography packages

Many photographers offer a range of packages, and you may prefer to contract a smaller package at the start and then choose a more expensive package at a later date if your budget permits. A popular modern alternative to traditional photo albums are digital albums designed to your requirements, giving stunning effects.

Your photos can also be put onto a DVD so that you can print out the best shots yourselves; this is an expensive option however, as the photographer will not be making money from albums!

There is no need to discuss your exact requirements and list of shots at this stage, but do make sure that your photographer is willing and able to take the kind of shots that you will want. One way of checking that the photographer is right for you is by having a set of engagement photos taken.

Your professional videographer

videographerMany couples also book a professional videographer to capture key moments of their special day on film. This will serve as a reminder of the whole day. For religious weddings, you need to check whether filming is allowed during the service.

Why not ask friends and family to make their own videos of the day, and have sections of these videos edited into the professional version, giving you an even more complete overview of your wedding day. As with a photographer, get recommendations and see the videographer’s work before booking.

Popular photographers and videographers fill up their schedules months (or even years!) in advance, and can often only work on one wedding a day, so as soon as you find one whose work you like and who you feel comfortable with, make a booking!
