Choosing your wedding reception style and caterers

What shall we offer our guests at our wedding reception?

Depending on the time of your marriage ceremony, you need to decide whether to offer your guests to eat at your reception.

You need to choose from a wedding breakfast, lunch, light afternoon meal, dinner or supper buffet. You could offer a sit-down hot meal, sit-down cold meal (fork buffet), or standing meal (finger buffet). A barbecue is another good option for outdoor weddings.

Some couples like to offer a formal sit-down meal immediately after the wedding for close friends and family, then a more informal dance party with buffet in the evening.

Book caterers

If the venue does not include catering, you will need to research and book caterers. Ask friends and family who have recently got married for recommendations. This should be one of your priorities on the planning schedule, as good caterers get booked up fast! You could do this around eight months before, but risk disappointment if you leave it too late.

At a later date you will need to order champagne, wine or liquor, depending on your needs. Some caterers may offer this service.
