Choosing wedding DJs, musicians and entertainment

Research and book deejays, musicians and entertainmentYou may want musicians for the marriage ceremony and entertainment for the reception, and perhaps have a particular deejay, band or singer in mind. Aim to choose performers that match the style of your wedding.

Wedding musicians

Many couples book a harpist, guitarist or singer to perform during their wedding ceremony, which gives the ceremony a very special personal touch. Another popular option is to ask a family member or friend who sings or plays an instrument to perform during your ceremony. Having a wedding song or piece of music written specially for your wedding is a wonderful way to start your married life, particularly if it is a surprise.

The entertainment you choose for your reception should ideally suit the style of the wedding: think of a country band for western-style weddings, a jazz singer or saxophonist for an urban evening reception, or an Elvis impersonator for a Las Vegas or Elvis themed wedding.

If you find an artist or have one recommended to you, but have not seen them perform, find out where they are performing and go and take a look before booking.

Wedding entertainment

As well as musicians or a deejay, you may also wish to hire a close-up magician. These professionals move from table to table, entertaining your guests. Hiring a clown or children’s entertainer is a great idea if you have a lot of children coming to your wedding.

Other ways of entertaining your wedding guests include dance teachers for salsa, line dancing or Scottish dancing, harpists, string quartets or bagpipers.

Entertainers and musicians’ schedules fill up pretty quickly, especially during the peak wedding season, so you are advised to book popular vendors as far in advance as possible.
