Ordering wedding attire

All about ordering the bride's gown, bridesmaids' dresses, and tuxedos for the men.

The bride's gown

Brides are advised to choose and order their wedding dress around eight months before their wedding date, but if you are having a custom gown made, this can take up to a year. By then you will have finalized details of the venue, reception, color scheme and any theme, so will be able to order your dress knowing what kind of wedding you are going to have. Rush orders are possible, and bridal stores sometimes work minor miracles to get a bride a dress in a matter of weeks, but this incurs an extra charge and causes added stress to your planning.

dress-storeIf you are planning to go on a diet before your wedding, it may be a good idea to order a gown that fits you now, and then have it altered if you have lost weight by the time the wedding day arrives.

Try not to order a dress in the size you are now and then put on weight, as this is obviously much more difficult to alter, and fabric panels will need to be added, usually at great expense.

The groom's tuxedo

The groom needs to decide whether to buy or rent a tuxedo, accessories and shoes, and order these items well in advance. Again, it is easier to do this once the rest of the wedding is starting to take shape, the color scheme has been decided upon, and the bride has chosen her dress.

In general, if all the men in the wedding party are to dress alike, it is a good idea for the groom to wear something slightly different to make him stand out: a different colored vest or tie, for example.

If renting, you will need to be sure of the procedure for returning the outfits after the wedding.

The bridesmaids' dresses

When ordering bridesmaids’ dresses, allow enough time to order, fit and alter the dresses. Experts recommend allowing six months for this.

If you have chosen the dresses for the bridesmaids, do show or send them a picture of the dress so that they feel more involved in the wedding plans. It is advisable to consult them before choosing the dresses, as we explain in our section on choosing bridesmaids’ dresses.

Order all wedding attire well in advance to ensure you have time for fittings and to keep things stress-free!
