Choosing The Dress

This is the really fun part of planning your wedding! But it is also potentially the most difficult, so take a look at our in-depth guide to choosing your bridal gown depending on body shape, height, skin and hair color, etc.

Visiting a bridal store

When you are ready to start visiting bridal stores, they may ask you to make an appointment in advance, as trying on bridal gowns is a time-consuming process and involves a lot of attention from the saleswoman. Take along your mother, sister or a trusted friend who will give you their honest opinion. Wear well-fitting underwear and the same kind of shoes that you will wear for your wedding. It is also a good idea to have roughly the same hairstyle to give you a better idea of the whole look. It is courteous to avoid wearing too much make-up so as not to soil the sample gowns.

She will then bring you a selection of gowns to try on, including some that you perhaps had not chosen but which she feels may be suitable for you. Remem

ber that they are experts on what looks good on each bride, so do allow them to give you advice. However, do not allow yourself to be pressured into purchasing the first gown you try on, even if you love it. You may come back to it eventually, having looked at other gowns, but brides rarely buy the first gown they try on.

Take a notebook and pen to take notes on your ideas and favorites. You will not be allowed to take photos of dresses until you have put down a deposit. Once you have ordered your dress, have a photo taken to help you when looking for accessories.

If you are having your dress made by a dressmaker, start making enquiries well in advance as this requires a much longer lead time than ordering a gown from a bridal store.

This is another example of when your wedding folder will be of use. Put in pictures, color samples, fabric swatches, things that inspire you. Check out our gallery of wedding dress designers for further inspiration.

Not forgetting your groom and attendants...

You also need to start thinking about bridesmaids' dresses, which is sometimes even more difficult than choosing your own dress as there are different tastes to be taken into account. Look at our gallery of bridesmaids' dress designers for ideas.

And not forgetting your groom and his groomsmen! Start looking for tuxedos to rent or purchase and find out which color palettes are available.
