The marriage of Crown Prince Harald of Norway and Sonja Haraldsen - August 29, 1968

Crown Prince Harald of Norway, who later became King Harald V of Norway in 1991, was born on February 21, 1937.

Sonja Haraldsen, born on July 4, 1937 in Vinderen, Oslo, became Crown Princess of Norway on her marriage.

The couple became King and Queen of Norway in 1991 on the death of King Olav, Harald's father.

Family life

The royal couple have two children, Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Märtha Louise, and a total of five grandchildren.

engagementThe engagement

In March 1968 the royal palace announced that King Olav had given his permission for Crown Prince Harald to marry commoner Sonja Haraldsen.

The couple had known each other for nine years before their marriage was approved. Their relationship had been kept secret as she was a commoner.

The Crown Prince made it clear to his father, King Olav V, that he would remain unmarried for life unless he could marry the woman he loved. This would have put an end to his family’s rule and perhaps an end to the Norwegian monarchy in Norway as he was the sole heir to the throne.

The ceremony

The wedding ceremony took place in Oslo Cathedral, Norway, on August 29, 1968. The bride was escorted down the aisle by her future father-in-law King Olav.

The wedding attire

The bride’s dress

The bride's gown was designed by Sigrid Vedeler from the Oslo fashion house of Mongstad, in close consultation with the bride. The simple but elegant silk dress had a high collar, fitted bodice, long sleeves and bell-shaped skirt. The dress featured pearl embroidery. The train of the dress was attached at the shoulders.

The bridesmaids

The four bridesmaids wore light blue long dresses and carried small bunches of flowers.

In line with the tradition of Norwegian royal brides, the bride chose not to wear a tiara and had white flowers in her hair instead. The only jewelry she wore was a pair of pearl stud earrings.

Sonja wore a long, layered veil.

The groom’s attire

The Crown Prince wore the blue gala uniform of the Norwegian Army, with the sash of the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav with star, the star of the Swedish Order of the Seraphim and the star of the Danish Order of the Elephant.
