Prince Charles & Lady Diana Spencer

The marriage of Prince Charles of Great Britain and Lady Diana Spencer - July 29, 1981

Prince Charles Phillip Arthur George, the Prince of Wales, was born at Buckingham Palace, London, on November 14, 1948, the eldest child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and heir to the English throne.

Lady Diana Frances Spencer was born on July 1, 1961, the youngest child of Earl Spencer and Frances Shand Kydd, who divorced when Diana was young. She was granted the title Her Royal Highness Diana, Princess of Wales on her marriage to Prince Charles.

Princess Diana died on August 31, 1997 in a car accident in Paris, France, along with her companion Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul. Diana's funeral took place in Westminster Abbey, London, on September 6, 1997.

Family life

Charles and Diana had two sons:

Prince William of Wales, born on June 21, 1982, who is second in line to the English throne, and Prince Henry of Wales, commonly known as Prince Harry, born on September 15, 1984.

The couple’s marriage ended in divorce on August 28, 1996. Diana maintained her title as Princess of Wales, but was no longer called Her Royal Highness.

The engagement

Prince Charles had known Lady Diana for some years, but first took an interest in her as a potential bride during summer 1980 at a country weekend where she watched him play polo. After a brief courtship, Prince Charles proposed on February 6, 1981, and Diana accepted, but their engagement was kept secret for the next few weeks until it became official on February 24, 1981.

Lady Diana was just 19 years old on her engagement. She was believed by many to be the perfect bride for Charles due to her Church of England faith, presumed virginity and English aristocratic background.

Prince Charles proposed to Lady Diana without a ring. After accepting his proposal, Diana chose her own ring from the then crown jewelers Garrard’s jewelry collection. The 18 carat oval cluster ring, with a gold band, features a sapphire surrounded by 16 small diamonds.

Diana's eldest son Prince William gave the ring to his fiancée Kate Middleton on their engagement in 2010.
