Wedding accessories: tiaras

Many modern brides choose to wear a tiara on their wedding day to feel like a “queen for a day”.

Originally worn only by queens and princesses, tiaras first started to be used by the rich in the nineteenth century, being worn at high society social occasions and weddings.

Tiaras fell out of fashion after the 1st World War, when women wore headbands and feather fascinators.

They became fashionable again in the 1930s thanks to Hollywood movies, and the 2nd World War caused them to go out of fashion again during this period of austerity. Tiaras were finally to come back for good in the 1950s, largely due to the influence of television and fashion magazines.

People often ask about the difference between a tiara and a diadem. Basically, a tiara is open at the back and a diadem forms a complete circle, like a small crown. However, in modern times the word diadem is also used to talk about a tiara.

Worn mainly by brides and bridesmaids at weddings, they are also popular for social occasions such as proms, quinceañera parties, proms and beauty pageants. They can sometimes be converted into a necklace and earrings to wear after the wedding, or can be kept as a family heirloom.

The chances are that, unlike royal princesses, you do not have a priceless diamond tiara at home for you to borrow. You may choose to buy a ready-made tiara or have one made to your specifications and color scheme. Depending on your budget, it could have Swarovski crystals, freshwater pearls, and gemstones, or be made from glass or plastic beads in a huge range of sizes, shapes and colors. You can choose from gold-plated, silver-plated or copper-colored wire and tiara bands.

A tiara can be worn with or without a veil, and can be as simple or as dramatic as you prefer. Tall brides may choose to wear a low tiara so as not to make them look taller, and petite brides may use a taller tiara to add the illusion of height.

Your bridesmaids could either wear similar versions of your own tiara, or they could have crystals in the same color as those used in your tiara woven into their hair.

Whatever you choose to wear on your head on your wedding day, you will look and feel like a princess!
