At a US wedding, the bride and groom may leave for their honeymoon immediately after the wedding reception, or wait until the excitement of the wedding has died down. This is often to an exotic and romantic location and could last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.
The honeymoon tradition began with the Teutonic peoples, who only celebrated weddings during a full moon. The origin of the word honeymoon comes from the custom that the newlyweds had to drink honey liquor for 30 days after the wedding.
Some of the most popular honeymoon destinations in the US for American newlyweds are Hawaii, New York, Niagara Falls, Florida, California, and Las Vegas. American newlyweds do not have to leave the US to find their perfect honeymoon destination, it's all right here, on our doorstep!
Top overseas destinations include Mexico, Jamaica, Tahiti and Bermuda, for couples looking for tropical beaches, diving and snorkelling, and a romantic ambience. England and Italy are popular European destinations for honeymooners who are more interested in culture and food.
