A peacock-themed wedding

peacockThe jewel colors and delicate silhouette of peacocks and their feathers can make a gorgeous focal point for your wedding.

Peacock feathers first became a popular design motif during the Art Nouveau movement and are a great theme for brides who are looking for something rather unusual and perhaps a little exotic.

Their rich, iridescent colors can be worked into every aspect of your day: your hairpiece, shoes, flowers, bridesmaids' dresses, wedding cake, even the groom's tie and accessories can be in a compatible shade.

Accessories and details in these colors - teal, blue, green and purple - will be easy to source. You may be inspired by some of the details on this site, and can then base your colors and ideas around this initial inspiration.

As with any theme, the level to which you adhere to it is really up to you. You may just wish to include one or two peacock feather accents to complement the jewel colors of your wedding, but if you are a true fan of peacocks then you could go all out and buy every accessory and wedding detail featuring your favorite bird!

A peacock-themed bride

This is perhaps the most extreme peacock gown ever: Made by eight craftsmen in just two months, this unique peacock feather gown was launched at the Wedding Culture Expo in Nanjing, China, using 2009 male peacock feathers in honor of Chinese year 2009. The dress is also adorned with 60 Hetian jades and is worth USD1.4 million.

Even if you don't want to wear a specifically peacock-based gown, you should consider at least one peacock accessory in your bridal attire in order to bring the whole look of the wedding together. Accessorize with a hair clip, shoe clips, necklace, or feather fan, or have peacock feathers incorporated into your bridal bouquet.

When planning table linens and decorations, you can keep it simple, with plain white linen and one or more peacock colors to bring the theme alive. How about a stunning centerpiece in the middle of each table, either using feathers as the focal point or the colors.

If you are planning an outdoor garden celebration, you could even consider renting live peacocks to add extra color and whimsy to your day. The cry of peacocks is unmistakable!

A peacock wedding cake

Why not follow the theme right through to the last detail, and order a peacock wedding cake? Here are some gorgeous examples, each one is so different from the last, giving you a chance to reveal your own personal sense of style.

Disclaimer for the superstitious...

It is worth bearing mind that in some cultures, such as Great Britain, it is thought to be unlucky to have the feathers of a peacock within the home or to handle anything made with them. Here is the background behind this superstition: Argus, in Greek mythology, had 100 eyes. After being caught in an act of deception by the King of Egypt, Argus was turned into a peacock and his 100 eyes became the "eyes" on the peacock's feathers. This has evolved into the association with the peacock's eyes as being "evil eyes".

But as with everything, if you want a peacock theme, don't let superstition stop you!
